- This is the first time McGoohan contributed to Columbo since Season 5 in 1976.
- Season 9 also marks the final time that James Frawley worked on the series.
- This season aired on Saturday nights except for Murder in Malibu which aired on a Monday.
- Speaking of, this was the final Columbo season to air on a regular basis. Season 10 consisted mostly of sporadically-released specials.
- With the broadcast of Columbo Cries Wolf on January 20, 1990, ABC brought Columbo into its fourth decade.
- Across the six episodes of this season, there are seven murders committed, including the historical murder of Harry Chudnow in Murder: A Self Portrait. There was one additional historical murder committed by Pete Garibaldi in Rest in Peace, Mrs. Columbo.
- Of these seven murders, three are by shooting, one is by drowning, one is by bludgeoning, one is by poisoning and one is the result of a snapped neck.
- The first season to feature two episodes which dramatically alter the Columbo formula; Columbo Cries Wolf and Murder in Malibu. Season 10 also does.
- This season features Vito Scotti's final appearance on Columbo as well as his largest.
- It was also the last time that the legendary Steven Bochco worked on the show.
- Uneasy Lies the Crown is the final time that Columbo battles a medical professional. He has faced a total of five over the course of the series.
- Columbo, along with Dog, is the first character to appear in this series, being the first onscreen character shown in Murder: A Self Portrait.
